I understand that people don’t like Amazon. It’s an incredibly ruthless company focused on goals. It’s often non-technical people that I hear bringing this up. I wonder what they would think if they learned about AWS?
I was in Stockholm a little while ago, and over dinner just happened to mention I bought my pasta from Amazon. A young guy thought this was outrageous. Why would I support them and buy pasta there? I tried to explain I prefer ‘Rummo’ pasta, and I can’t actually buy that from local stores. But, NO! This was an awful thing I was doing. Apparently.
Okay.
I’m not changing pasta brands for any man or cause.
Anyway – I needed to replace a very old shower at home that had served us well. It was well beyond its guarantee…and it duly died.
First thing to replace was a pump. So I decided to go for a ‘bricks and mortar’ store. I wasn’t going to use Amazon this time.
Six weeks later, many enquiry emails and one or two threats of cancelling the order – it arrived!
After I installed it I then found out I needed a new valve (it’s a recessed shower valve, IYKYK).
I don’t want to do major pipe work right now so I needed to retrofit something. I found a likely candidate and went to my local big box store (again, let’s avoid Amazon). The conversation went something like this:
“I want a shower valve”
“Oh it takes a while to design a shower…”
“No, just the valve. Come with me and I’ll point it out…that one”
“You just want that??”
[Do people not do DIY anymore?] “Yes, just that”
“You have to order it online”
“What? You don’t have it?”
“No, you need to order online and wait”
Okay.
So I ordered it online. Just short of £400 and it would take up to 10 days to be delivered.
Okay.
This was beginning to get frustrating. Nearly two months without this shower working and I’m a slave to lead times. Out of interest I asked Herself to check Amazon:
“Same one, £120 cheaper and it’ll be delivered tomorrow”
“Do it”
I understand the issues. I see the problem. I have empathy with people negatively impacted…but sometimes, I just need my shower to work. And I don’t want it to take bloody months.
